Onboard

  • Taichi Session On Sundeck
    • Rejuvenate yourself in preparation for a busy day of exploration with a Tai Chi class on board The Au Co Cruise. While Tai Chi originated in China, the lessons introduced on board are basic and have been simplified so that everyone can follow. Our Tai Chi trainer will guide you through each part of the lesson. Tai Chi exercise is a gentle way to release stress and fatigue. This particular martial art can also improve strength and flexibility. Fresh air from the bay combined with soothing traditional Vietnamese music will help you to achieve total relaxation.
  • MasterChef Competition
    • Continue your fabulous day with an exciting activity onboard. At around 5.30 pm to 6.00 pm, we will hold a “Masterchef Competition” where you have a fun time before dinner. Back to the ship after your outdoor excursions, take a shower and get ready to join us for Masterchef Competition.
    • Our Head Chef will be the host for this “show”, he will guide you to make the most famous and tasty Vietnamese dish – “Nem” (Spring roll). Started as a cooking demonstration, the Chef introduces ingredients needed and how to choose the best one. Then he walks you through each step to roll a spring roll with the perfect shape. Learning cooking with us, you not only know how to make the dish but also learn more about the local culture. Gastronomy has become an ambassador for Vietnamese culture in which spring roll is one of the signature culinary specialties. When our chef finishes with his part, it’s your turn to cook the spring roll yourself. It is much more fun in a competition what we call a Masterchef Competition.
    • Put on an apron and a chef hat, you are ready to get into the tournament to find the Masterchef. This is an exciting elimination tournament. There are two contestants in each round. The winners will go to the next round. It keeps going until we have the final winner. The “Masterchef” will be awarded a small gift and a certificate at dinner time the same day.
    • Masterchef Competition promises to be a great start for your evening with a lot of fun and laughs. It’s lovely to try your hands with gentle rice papers and various grinded gradients, you would find out how skillful you are and remember this moment as a memorable time during your trip. Taste hot and crispy deep-fried Nem you made by yourself, wow, it is likely the most delicious food you have ever tried.
  • Fruit Carving Demonstration
    • In the evening come and witness the traditional art of fruit carving in our special demonstration. You will see firsthand how the beautiful presentations on your buffet table are created. Join us as fruit and vegetables, including carrots and pumpkins, are transformed into roses, carnations and much more. Our chef will explain and demonstrate each step to make the carving, before you get a chance to try it yourself. Create beautiful flowers and birds from normal vegetables. There will be a little competition for guests joining the fruit carving. The winner will get a surprise gift from our chef. This is a great way to spend your evening with your family or a group of friends.
  • Vietnamese Tea Ceremony
    • People are familiar with Japanese or Chinese tea ceremonies but Vietnam also has a distinctive tea culture of its own. The tea we use and the way we drink it are much different with what you see in other countries. The Vietnamese have a preference for tea with a strong taste. The most popular kinds of tea are green tea and dried tea. Each kind has its own unique taste. The quality of the final cup of tea depends on both the quality of the tea itself and how it is prepared. Joining our Vietnamese tea ceremony on board The Au Co, our Tea Master will share tips to choose high quality tea and the steps to making the perfect cup.

Offboard

  • Visiting Community Farm
    • The village in Au Co’s itinerary is called “Isolated Paradise” due to its seclusion from the outside world. To support the local community, and its economy, The Au Co Cruise helped to build a community farm within the village which provides jobs and an extra income for local villagers. The fresh vegetables grown here are brought back to the kitchen on board and used as ingredients for meals in The Au Co restaurant. The vegetables here are mainly seasonal and are grown using traditional farming methods, completely free of pesticides and other chemicals. Sweet potatoes, cucumbers, jicama are some of the typical vegetables to be found on the organic farm. You will have an opportunity to see a real-life operational Vietnamese farm and how the local people work here
  • Kayaking in Halong Bay
    • Kayaking is a must try when you visit Halong Bay. With your kayak and paddles, you are free to explore limestone caves and secluded beaches. The water in Halong is calm which makes kayaking easier. During your journey with The Au Co Cruise, guests will have the choice to kayak in both Ba Ham Lake and Dark & Bright caves. Featuring many beautiful beaches and thousands of karst towers in a variety of shapes and sizes, kayaking in these areas will be a highlight of your cruise. Aboard The Au Co, we provide guests with sit-on-top kayaks. This type of kayak is light and easy to control, making it easy for beginners to operate. There are private kayaks onboard during the cruise so guests can go anytime they like provided the ship is in one of the designated kayaking areas.
  • Biking at Viet Hai Village
    • The three-day two-night cruise enables The Au Co to take guests further, and explore areas of Halong Bay more thoroughly. Biking is often one of the guests’ favourite activities during The Au Co Cruise. Our guests will have a chance to bike in one of famous Halong’s traditional village located in the midst of the jungle. The village covers a total area of 86.25 km² with a population of just 213 people. The total distance for biking is about 5 km. There are some low hills and a tunnel. It should be easy for everyone to keep up but there are some other options available. You can choose either to bike in and out of the village or use an electric cart. Our tour guide will lead the biking group and introduce guests to the site. Take your time to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery.
  • Visiting Caves
    • Halong Bay’s limestone caves possess outstanding characteristics which contribute to unique quality of this UNESCO Word Heritage Site. The caves’ aesthetic value is obvious from the moment you step inside. Covered in stalactites, stalagmites and a diverse composition of rock, travelers will find themselves temporarily transported back in time. Surprise Cave, and the other caves in Halong, were formed as the region underwent geological processes that lasted around 500 million years. This spectacular seascape sculpted throughout history is truly a natural treasure. The largest cave in Halong Bay is Surprise Cave covering an area of approximately 10,000 sqm.
  • Relax on Secluded Beach
    • Together with kayaking, swimming is another activity on the must-do list. There are certain areas that allow swimming in the bay where the water is not too deep. The water is a nice temperature, cool in the summer, and the emerald waters are perfect for swimming. If you look through the water, you can often see coral at the bottom. After swimming, you can choose a sandy beach to relax or sunbathe. Beaches in Halong are not as large as the ones along the coast but many small beaches stretching between the mountains offer magnificent views of the bay. In addition, guests can find their own private beach, with no one on sight, for a more secluded and idyllic experience.
  • Trekking on the Cat Ba Island
    • Trekking is an exclusive activity that is only offered on our three-day two-night cruise. Halong’s largest island is an ideal places for this activity. The island covers an area of 354 sq km, endowed with green forests, limestone mountains and karst caves. One part of the island was declared a national park. The trekking tour involves climbing to a cave. There will be a tour guide for the entirety of the trek, who knows the area and is experienced in trekking. During the trek, guests can see rare endemic species of fauna and flora. Many species in the national park are very distinctive and are listed in the World Red Book. The most typical example is the Cat Ba Langur in which protection projects are dedicated to.
  • Meet the Locals
    • The local village where you will visit used to be separated from other regions. Life in the village still retains many of the primitive aspects of ancient civilizations. People here live a simple and happy life. Within the small village, the inhabitants have formed a tight-knit community. The culture of the village reflects the traditional culture of Vietnam. Cruising with The Au Co, you will have the chance to talk with local people, get to know their culture a little better and experience what life is like for them here. As a pleasant stop over during the exploration, guests will visit an architectural marvel built by a gifted, local artist. The house features a special design and, built using bamboo, reflects the life of the villager’s ancestors hundreds of years ago. In recent years, the number of foreign visitors coming here has increased gradually, as they come to admire the cultural practices used by the local residents to live a rudimentary and self-sufficient life.

Our experience on the cruise from September 23rd to 24th was truly special as we celebrated a wedding with family and friends on board. The Au Co team made the occasion unforgettable with their excellent organization. The food and service were outstanding, and they offered a variety of meal options. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. A highlight was the traditional music played during the event, particularly by Andrej, who played the zither beautifully. We look forward to returning in the near future.

My wife and I went on our honeymoon and it was truly incredible. Our cabin was set up perfectly, exceeding our honeymoon expectations. The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating, and the food was delightful. We even had a special dinner ceremony just for us as a couple. The activities were generally enjoyable, but the cave experience after kayaking was a bit of a letdown. The cave was smaller than we had hoped and it led to a beach where swimming was supposedly allowed. However, the beach was too dirty for swimming and there was a sign indicating that swimming was prohibited, so no one ventured into the water. It seemed like the ships might be dumping trash into the sea, as we noticed a lot of food waste floating around.

From the instant we were greeted at Hanoi airport for our seaplane journey to when we returned to our hotel in Hanoi the following day, our experience was incredible. Our host, Harry, was exceptional and ensured we were well taken care of during our overnight cruise. The food on board was absolutely delicious, enhancing the entire adventure. Everything was top-notch!

Our journey with Scenic Cruises included a delightful two-night stay on Au Co, where we managed to experience so much. The check-in process was smooth and easygoing. Our executive cabin, while cozy, was equipped with all the essentials. The cuisine was superb, and the staff were all incredibly friendly. Although the itinerary was packed, it ensured we thoroughly explored and enjoyed Ha Long Bay. Drinks weren’t covered in the package, but they were reasonably priced. All in all, it was a fantastic part of our voyage.

We recently completed a 3-day, 2-night cruise aboard Au Co as part of our Apt tour. Our journey began and concluded with a bus ride to and from Hanoi. Among the many vessels in Ha Long Bay, the boat was both comfortable and well-equipped. Our cabin, number 202, was located at the rear and featured a spacious balcony with chairs and lounges. Both the bedroom and bathroom were generously sized and extremely comfortable. The sundeck was impressive, though not frequently used, likely due to the cloudy weather. The excursions were well-organized and quite enjoyable. The food and beverages on the ship were excellent, and the staff were friendly, though many spoke limited English. It is unfortunate that the local communities and organizations don’t maintain the cleanliness of this UNESCO World Heritage site better, as the waters surrounding the thousand islands are littered with floating debris. Nevertheless, Au Co provided us with a highly enjoyable experience.

We spent a night in cabin 108, which was roomy and nicely appointed. However, a kettle would have been a convenient addition. The meals on the ship were delightful, and the crew provided outstanding service. Unfortunately, the weather was not in our favor, as it was overcast, rainy, and foggy, preventing us from enjoying the bay’s full beauty. Nonetheless, the excursions to the fishing village and the caves were both fun and engaging.

We thoroughly relished our brief two-night journey to this stunning region. The ship itself was beautiful, and the crew was welcoming, accommodating, and efficient. The food was excellent. Entertainment from Andrej and the team was amazing. Sofia was putting in a lot of effort!

The arrangements beforehand and the guidance during the cruise were excellently managed. The meals were tasty, and they even accommodated menu requests. Although the cocktails were often improvised and didn’t always follow the correct recipes, the crew was exceptionally friendly and eager to assist. Activities like kayaking and cycling to the mountain village were part of the package. However, the downside was the cabin’s damp and stale odor due to humidity, which they attempted to mask with a fragrance vaporizer.

8.5/10

We embarked on a three-day, two-night cruise. The ship itself was pleasant, featuring friendly staff and plentiful, tasty meals. Sadly, the bay’s condition has deteriorated, with trash and oil slicks visible throughout the water. The cruise included brief excursions for kayaking and exploring beaches and caves. We had our swimsuits ready, thinking we’d swim and relax on the beach, but we stayed in our kayak instead. The state of the water deterred us from swimming. We felt quite let down, as the stunning karst formations were marred by the excessive litter, numerous tour boats, and oil rigs. Among the various cruise options, this one seems to stand out as one of the better choices. We enjoyed a private balcony, and everything was tidy. However, our primary reason for the trip was to experience the natural environment, not just the cruise amenities. That’s why we rated it three stars.
